Visit To “Meet N.Z." Exhibition by Wanganui Girl
A visit to the “Meet New Zealand” exhibition, Christmas with relatives in Lancashire, and a journey back to London by motor coach via historic Watling Street are described by Miss Jean Evans, a Wanganui girl who is visiting Britain, in a recent airmail letter to a friend in Wanganui. While at the exhibition Miss Evans bought a book entitled “Introducing New Zealand,” which Is of interest to Wanganui as many of the illustrations are the work of Mervyn Taylor, whose wife, nee Miss E. Cook ,is a daughter of Mr G. Cook, of Wanganui. Miss Evans also states that her grandmother is mentioned briefly in the chapter on literature. News of a New Zealander, Alexander Grant, is given in a brief account of a broadcast by the eminent ballet critic, Arnold Haskell, who described the young Wellington boy as a “great discovery." Although Christmas in Lancashire was not the traditionally white one, Miss Evans reported that the decorations of holly and mistletoe were in the true British spirit.
