SANDY’S CORNER
lllllllllllllllllllllllllNlllllllllKllilllllllllM OVERTIME. “Bos Murphy’s left arm is working overtime,” said an announcer yesterday. We take it that he will get at least “time and a half” for that, probably* “double time.” There is not much use working overtime in an era of socialism without making socialism do its duty. It might well be asked, of course, whether a “right” arm will ever work overtime. The Hon. Timothy Hogshead, F.R.5.8., T.A.P., president w of the Wanganui Beer Drinkers’ Industrial Union of Workers, says that his union permits the right arm to work overtime between the hours of 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. WRATH TURNETH AWAY. We are glad that that great daily “The Star,” of Montreal, has been big enough to apologise; we are particularly glad for the safety of the 26 Canadian bowlers who arc in our midst at present We are afraid that had the “Star” not been the big paper that it is nc bowls would have been played today, or to-morrow, or any other day. Fancy playing with bowlers who look upon New Zealanders as "Aussies”! Not only would bowls have been cancelled under such a mark on this Dominion’s escutcheon, but it is almost certain that the Wanganui Bowling centre would have been charged with the responsibility of holding the 26 bowling visitors to the city as hostages, until such degradation was removed. We New Zealanders take our nationality very proudly. Our country is but a couple □f pieces of rock thrust up in the ocean, a vast ocean, we live across the Tasman from Australia, we've shared honour, glory and degradation with Australians, but no man dare call us “Aussies.” We’ve seen the inside of a French estaminet. in a little place called Authie, ripped to pieces, champagne, wine, beers and all, because “Madame” thought that New Zealand was an island in Sydney harbour. But the "big” Star of Montreal has set things right. Realising its mistake it has apologised, and every New Zea(especially the bowlers) being gentlemen, has accepted that apology with becoming grace and dignity. You Canadian visitors sleep in peace. A dangerous situation has been well handled, a disaster averted.
