FIRST A.T.C. CADET FLIES SOLO WITH WANGANUI AERO CLUB
The first Wanganui Air Training Corps cadet to fly solo after instruction with the Wanganui Aero Club is Murray Nye. He made his first solo flight at the Wanganui airport yesterday in a Tiger Moth after receiving 8 hours 20 minutes dual instruction. Two of the other three cadets who .are receiving instruction through the, Wanganui Aero Club under the Government scheme are expected to fly solo in the near’ future. The fourth candidate was trained more thah a year ago and already has done a considerable amount of solo flying. The instruction of the Air Training Corps cadets has been hampered by strong winds of recent weeks. The pupils each receive 30 hours’ free flying. Of this 18 hours is dual instruction and the remaining 12 hours is solo flying. This flying has to be completed by the end of March, but the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) recently intimated that the Government would consider an extension of time if necessary. Most of the instruction for cadets is given in the early morning, late in the afternoon and on week-ends.
