WANGANUI SOFTBALL RESUMES AFTER HOLIDAY RECESS
When men’s softball for the Bensil Shield resumed on Saturday after the Christmas recess, Wanganui East defeated United 21-12, and Red Sox defeated Star 7-3. In the first game, Wanganui East showed improvement and deserved their win. F. Rigley shaped well on first base. Good games were played by G. Dinnington, C. Croucher, and A. Temperton. For United B. Mathews and D. Donaldson were outstanding. In the Red Sox-Star contest, exciting play kept players and spectators on their toes. Superior batting by Red Sox won them the game. Outstanding players were S. Hopper, C. Clark, E. Rice, R. Kendall, and W. Jefferies. Star have been unfortunate this year through losing a number of club men. However the new blood in the team is doing well, and next season this team will be as strong as ever. For Star, L. Lamont, a new player, shaped well, as did J. Mitchell, who, next year, will develop into a, first-class catcher. Score sheet. —Red Sox, 2,2, 0,2, 1, 0. total 7; Star. 2,0, 0, 0. 0. 1,0, total 3. Home runs.—Red Sox, S. Hopper 2 R. Kendall 1.
