HORSES FOR PAHIATUA
TRACK WORK AT AWAPUNI (Special) Palmerston Jf., Jan. 27. Seven-furlong gallops by Prince Wanaka and Lady Burford were the highlights of this morning’s work at Awapuni. The two-ye:’.r-olds worked on the course proper against the rails, but the plough was in use for most of the fast work. Prince Wanaka was ridden by W. L. Aitken and after cutting out the first half-mile in 50 2-5 he came home well in better than 41 to complete in 1.31 15. Lady Burford (L. J. Clutterbuck) was out later and she was brought home over the last three by Havilday (P: Gray). She ran the full distance in 1.33 and came home from the three in 40. Lady Oratory, one of the first to work against the watch, ran half a mile in 53, the last three in 40. Golden Casket, Coronara and Ensign sprinted five in 1.6 3-5, the last three in 40 3-5. It was nice work. Glen Urquhart (Clutterbuck) and Newel Post (W. J. Broughton) covered the last three in 42 to complete seven in 1.37. Neither was under pressure at any stage. Gay Stroller (Broughton) was not at top over seven, the last six taking hint 1.23 3-5. Bright Side (Aitken) took 1.24 for six, the last three easily in 42. Lord Kerry (S. Waddell) and Good Music (Clutterbuck) worked attractively over six in 1.21 and they were together after running the last three in 41. Perdita was out with a companion and galloped brilliantly over three in 32 2-5. Her win at Awapuni was not unexpected. Emerge (B. Boreham) and Lord
Holland (Broughton) could have improved upon 1.35 2-5 for seven and they covered the last three smoothly in better than 42. Currency Lass (D. Collins) and Grand Affair (J. Harris) sprinted six in 1.21, and Übbriaco (Clutterbuck) worked at just under 15 to the furlong. Audacious (Broughton) now in J. J. Waller’s stable, sprinted five with Nightena (Aitken) in 1.7 2-5.
