NORTH ISLAND HORSES WON £23,000 AT TRENTHAM

Twelve Owners Were Credited With £lOOO Or More

Proportionate to the size of the contingent from south of Cook Strait, South Island horses secured a big share of the stakes offered by the Wellington Racing Club for the three-day summer meeting, but the North Island, with greater representation over the 24 races, carried off more than half the stake-money. In all the club offered £37,605 in stakes. The Southlander, Spare Part, took the chief event, the Wellington Cup, but the classic Wellington Stakes and the two weight-for-age events, the Gloaming Stakes and the Trentham Stakes, were won by the North Island.

North Island stables accounted for some £23,000 of the stakemoney, but the South Island did well to secure a little over £14,000. and stake-earners from down south averaged out better than their northern opposition, mainly as a result of the successes achieved by Spare Part and Indian Dawn the latter winning the Summer Handicap.

Twelve owners at the meeting won £lOOO or more, and at the head of the list came the owner of Spare Part, Mr. H. O. Batchelar, who took the £lO5 Cup trophy and £3900. Leading North Island owner was Mr, T. C. Lowry, for whom Desert Fox won £2575 through his fourth in the Wellington Cup and his win in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, Jaconet adding £l6O when she was runner-up in the Fitzherbert Handicap. After Mrs. N. H. Barlow, of Christcvhurch, with £1950 through Indian Dawn’s win, came the Maharajah of Kashmir, for whom Ladyship won £1535 and Ann Bridge £4O. The Wangaehu owner of The Pagan, Mr. W. B. Connors, tied for fifth place with Mr. F. A. Roberts, of Christchurch, owner of Citril, each winning £1490. When Sweet Nymph won the Gloaming Stakes she credited her owner-breeder, Mr. R. H. W. Holden, with £1450, as did King’s Ransom, winner of the Trentham Stakes and owned by Mr. H. V. Lunken. With Great Trek and Selas Mr, F. Ormond was credited with winning £1375. Beau le Havre’s second in the Wellington Cup was worth £l2OO to Mr. M. J. Nash, jun. That a good hack in form can earn big figures was proved by Tenor Royal, whose two successes in hack company at the meeting were worth £lO4O. In open company Mesalliance, with a win and a second, secured £lO2O for Mr. H. Collinson. Most consistent of those just below the four-figure mark was Incident, owned by Mr. W. H. Simpson, the Lord Quex gelding earning £7BO with a win and a third in the highweight events and a second in the only hurdle race at the meeting.

In all, more than 60 owners shared in the stake-money at the Trentham meeting, and as there were 24 events, it is evident there was a wide distribution.
