WANGANUI DISTRICT TEAMS COMPETING AT TARANAKI TOURNEY

Three Wanganui and district fours won both games when section play in the Tarakki Bowling Centre’s open fours tournament began today on greens at New Plymouth, Waitara, Inglewood and Stratford. They were W. Raine (Wanganui East) in Section G._ Thomas (Ohakune) in Section E., and Fletcher (Wanganui East) in Section A. Hutton (Marton) beat Hearsay (Takara), 22-21, but lost to Gilbert (Kelburn) 32-35. Richdale (Gonville) in Section B lost to Smith (Palmerston North) 18-26, but defeated Caley (Petone Central) 25-16. Kirkwood (St. John’s lost both his games in Section C to Colquhoun (Palmerston North) 19-27, and to Doogan (Island Bay). In Section D, Tilley (Wanganui) beat Butler (Palmerston North) 22-21, but lost narrowly to Gee (Hutt). Thomas (Ohakune) in Section E beat Mills (Manawatu) 21-19, and Mattar (Thorndon) 25-24. In Section F Morgan (Waverley) beat Raffles (Onehunga), but went down to Sinclaire (Lepperton) while Harris (St. John’s) beat Greening (Manawatu) 34-14 and lost to Richards (Hutt) 22-23. Raine (Wanganui East) won both his games in Section G against Orviss (Naenae) 25-16 and Snell (Terrace End) 32-10. Walker (Wanganui) lost to both Burgess (Oroua) 24-26, and Hunt (Haitaitai) 26-33 in Section H. In Section I, Webby (Wanganui East) went down to D. Jones (Manawatu), but defeated Judd (Naenae) 28-17. Fletcher (Wanganui East) beat Dewe (Feilding) 26-24 in Section J and Ceroo (Naenae) 30-19. In Section K, Armstrong (Gonville) was beaten 20-26 by Wilson (Naenae) and 18-30 by Mason (Vogeltown). Steel (Wanganui) in Section L lost to Lomas (Lepperton) 21-25 and to Lobb (West End, New Plymouth) narrowly. W. Harris (Wanganui) broke even in Section M, beating Smith (Hutt) 26- but losing to Wicks (New Plymouth) 26-28. In Section N, Tizard (St. John’s) beat Craig (Island Bay 27- but lost to Cottam (New Plymouth) 19-27. A MARATHON GAME The game between A. Tilley (Wanganui) and J. Butler (Palmerston) at Inglewood proved a real maratjion. Four and a quarter hours were needed to complete the game in which 35 ends were played with nine being burned.
