Trail Of Destruction As Blizzard Sweeps Eastern U.S. States
New York, Jan. 25 A blizzard which lashed the entire eastern seaboard swept out to sea today, leaving at least 23 dead and a trail of disrupted transport and clogged highways. Areas as far south as the Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, and even New Orleans were struck by blinding snowstorms. The nation’s coldest snot was Montpelier Junction, Vermont, where it was 45 degrees below freezing point. Sweeping out of Georgia, the storm raked Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York, and then New England. Flights at La Guardia Airfield, New York, were cancelled, and many trains are running up to seven hours late. Storm and gale warnings are posted along most of the Atlantic Coast. With the snowfall already over four inches ,a total ot 14 inches is predicted for New York City. A coastguard aircraft carrying five men is feared lost in the storm. At least 23 persons are dead in widely scattered sections from causes attributable to the weather, including one death in Georgia and two deaths in Texas from freezing. In Ohio snow fell to depths up to 15 inches and is still coming down. Practically all Ohio River traffic is stopped.
