EISENHOWER REFUSES NOMINATION AS U.S. PRESIDENT

(N.Z.P.A. —Copyright.) Washington, Jan. 23 General Eisenhower today announced his refusal to accept nomination for election as President of the United States. He said: “I am not available for and could not accept nomination to a high political office.” General Eisenhower, who in all recent public opinion surveys had been chosen as the man who would have the best chance of winning next November’s election as a Republican candidate, indicated that he considered his military qualifications automatically disqualified him for the Presidency. General Eisenhower said he had hitherto refrained from flatly turning down the nomination, because it might “smack of effrontery.” General Eisenhower’s statement was contained in a letter to a newspaper publisher who had written him saying that he was the best man for the country. General Eisenhower insisted that his decision is definite and positive.
