SOME HIGH SCORING IN RANGITIKEI CRICKET ON SATURDAY

EXHILARATING CENTURY BY A. BELL. (0.C.) Marton, Jan. 24. One of the fastest centuries ever scored on the Marton county ground went to the credit of A. Bell (Old Boys) when fourth series of cricket matched in the Rangitikci competition were concluded to-day. Bell flogged the Porewa bowling and in an exhilarating display hoisted his three-figure score in 48 minutes, hitting six sixers and 11 fours. Marton and Ohakea staged a high ly exciting finish at Ohakea. The home team declared with 156 runs on the board for the loss of nine wickets. Marton set out to chase the runs and at stumps required only two runs to win with four wickets in hand. The match was drawn with honours resting with Marton. Hunterville trounced a weak Junction eleven, winning by an innings and 120 runs. Hunterville made 212 and then dismissed Junction for 68 and 24—an eight-point win tor Hunterville. Porewa made 152 and Old Boys replied with 203 for the loss of six wickets to win by 51 runs and four wickets. The winners owed their first innings victory to the aggressiveness of Bell, who swung the long handle to advantage. With the exception of one team it was an afternoon of tall scoring, due mainly to the poor fielding, especially in the “air. ’ In almost every case those batsmen who registered good tallies had up to three “lives.’’ Some of the catching was shocking. There needs to be a decided improvement in this department of the game if Rangitikei is to improve. The afternoon was windy, but fine, and wickets and outfields fast. HONOURS BOARD. Batting. A. Bell (Old Boys) 3 for 19 OLD BOYS BEAT POREWA. After losing four wickets for 43, Porewa made a good recovery to reach 152 against Old Boys. B. Gray (57) and V. Smith (26) were associated in a valuable seventh wicket partnership worth 55 runs, taking the score from 90 to 145. With their dismissal the ‘'tail” offered no resistance, the side being out tor 152. A. Bell and M. Wysoscki each secured three wickets. Wysocki at one stage had three for six. He dismissed ParKinson and A. Fullerton-Smith with successive balls and off the next Christensen was run out—three wickets falling for three balls, but a “hat trick” could not be claimed as the last batsmar. was run out. Wysocki (30) and V. Simcox (39) gave Old Boys a good start but their rate of scoring as too slow to amass the 153 runs required to force a win in 120 minutes. A draw seemed apparent until the arrival of Bell, who soon collared the bowling and gave the fieldsmen an overdose of leather hunting to all corners of the field. His prodigious hitting soon placed a different complexion on the game and 15 minutes before stumps Porewa’s total was passed. To permit Bell to complete an obvious century, extra time was played and lie was left, unbeaten with 101, although his innings was by no means chanceless. Porewa: R. Parkinson, c and b Wysocki 22; M. Had the game started on time, Marton would probably have scored a first innings win over Ohakea. Ohakea batted first, Fox top-scoring Willi 41 In a total of 156 for nine when the closure was applied. In endeavouring to chase the runs, two Marton batsmen were run out, but the consistent Monk, with a certain amount of luck, nearly brought victory to his side by making 91 not out when time was called with the score standing at 155 for six wickets, just two runs short of a win.
