SWEET NYMPH DOMINATES GLOAMING STAKES

Following her decisive win in -the Great Northern Derby on New Year’s Day, Sweet Nymph is likely to be a short-priced favourite for the Gloaming Stakes, which will be decided next Thursday, the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting.

Sweet Nymph’s performance in the Great Northern Derby stamped her as one of the best fillies of recent seasons, and her time of 2min 31 2-5 sec for the mile and a half was only two-fifths of a second outside Kinder garten’s race record. It is not often that a three-year-old filly proves superior to the colts, but at Ellerslie Sweet Nymph was probably so much better than her rivals as to deter them from entering for the Gloaming Stakes, as only 11 others have been entered, seven of which are fillies. The colts and geldings that may oppose Sweet Nymph are the New Zealand Derby winner, Liebestraum, Distinction, which finished secona in both the New Zealand and the Great Northern Derby, the Dunedin Guineas winner, Kartikeya, and the Waikato Guineas winner, Foxbay.

So far this season Sweet Nymph has won a total of £5005, her 11 starts having resulted in four firsts, two seconds, and a third, and by the end of the season she may have amassed one of the highest stakes totals credited to a three-year-old filly in New Zealand. She has won at her last three starts and in each case has outstayed the opposition.
