WANGANUI CENTENNIAL PROGRAMME

The Wanganui Centennial Cup, with a stake of £2OOO, will oe one of the feature events at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting on February 7 and 14, signifying that the fixture celebrates the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of race meetings at Wanganui. The race will be run over about a mile and a-half, and the winner's owner will receive £1250 and a gold cup valued at £l5O. In addition, the trainer of the winning horse will receive a trophy valued at £4O and the successful rider a ElO trophy. Corresponding event on the second day will be the Earle Stakes, carrying a stake of £1250, the distance in this being a mile and a-quarter. Still more satisfaeto y is the reuxal of the Jackson Stakes, the distance for which has been extended to a mile. This is a weight-for-age event for a stake of £lOOO, which includes a gold cup valued at £lOO, donated by the grandchildren of the late Freeman R. Jackson, who was for many years secretary of the club. Two open sprints on the respective days are the Flying Handicap (£750) and the Campbell Handicap (£650). These will be run over a distance of six furlongs and 40 yards, starting from barrier stalls. Principal hack event will be the Harrison Hack Handicap on the second day, run over ten furlongs, fills will be for a stake of £6OO, the winner's share being £420. The winning trainer will receive a trophy valued at £4O and the successful jockey a £lO trophy. As well as providing for hack sprinters and stayers the prografme caters for maiden horses, juveniles and hack hurdlers. Nominations for all events are due to close at 5 p.m. next Tuesday, with the secretary, Mr. S. R. McCallum.
