OBITUARY

MR. H. E. FOOKES. The death has occurred of Mr. Harry Egmont Fookes, widely known throughout New Zealand for long and devoted work for the Anglican Church, aged 79. He was a layreader in St. Mary’s parish, New Plymouth, for nearly 50 years, and has also been a diocesan layreader. He was for many years a member of St. Mary's vestry and at death was a member of the parish board of nominations. Mr. Fookes was the eldest son of Mr. A. C. Fookes, who came from Britain in the ship Black Eagle in 1861. Born at Waverley, Mr. Fookes entered the Post and Telegraph Department as a cadet in the telegraph nranch in 1885, being posted to Wellingon. When he retired in 1922, he had been telegraph supervisor in New Plymouth for many years. Soon afterwards he joined the New Plymouth borough inspector's ofiice as a clerk, retiring in 1945. Mr. Fookes was a member of the New Plymouth Choral Society from its inception. He had been a bowler and was the second oldest member of the New Plymouth Bowling Club, of which he was also twice singles champion and secretary for several years. He is survived by four children, his wife having predeceased him.
