CANTERBURY STAGES BRIGHT RECOVERY AGAINST AUCKLAND

(P.A.) Christchurch, Dec. 28. Canterbury staged a remarkable recovery on the last day of the Plunket Shield match against Auckland and, although when play started an outright defeat for the home team seemed inevitable, at close of play it was Auckland which was struggling to avert defeat. Auckland won on the first innings. The day was a triumph for youth In the Canterbury team, three young players taking part in their first shield match. J. G. Leggat, C. G. Snook and.A. R. MacGibbin all scored half-centuries, and the overnight score of 78 for five was converted to 269 for eight. When the innings was declared closed at the tea interval, Auckland was left a shade over two hours to score 203 runs, but another fine spell of bowling by T. Burtt soon removed any hopes the batsmen had of making runs. At the end of the day Auckland had scored 122 for six wickets, and although Auckland took four points for the first innings win to Canterbury’s two, the honours at the end of an interesting day’s play were easy. The match set a new attendance record for Canterbury Plunket Shield matches, the gate takings for the four days being 1760. Scores:—
