KEEN FINISHES SEEN AT NIGHT ATHLETIC SPORTS

Competitors from a wide area competed at the electric light sports meeting held on Cook's Gardens on Saturday night under the control of the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. The 100 yards sprint (senior) was won by H. Shields, with M. Russell runner-up. D. Rasmussen won the 220 yards handicap off 9 yards, with W. Humphries runnerup. Finishing strongly, S. McKenzie won the 880 yards senior race. In the women’s sprint events. Miss P. Montague was first in both the 75 yards ana 100 yards contests. Large fields contested the cycling events and thrilling finishes were seen in the majority of races. In a special cycling triangular match race of 500 metres, J. Laidlaw won by inches from W. Williams in a desperate finish over the final lap. There were a number of spills in the cycle races but only one competitor had to go to hospital for treatment.
