SHIPS QUEUE UP FOR BERTHS AT AUCKLAND WHARVES

<p A.) Auckland, Dec. 28. When Waterfront work resumes at Auckland tomorrow morning alter a holiday since noon on Christmas Eve, every berth will be filled with shipping and five overseas vessels wiil be waiting at anchor in the stream. Clearance of shipping just before Christmas enabled all vessels then waiting to berth but another queue has since accumulated.

The port will again be idle during the New Year holiday from noon on New Year's Eve until Friday morning. Sixteen overseas ships and 14 large intercolonial and coastal vessels will be in port tomorrow. Thirteen of the overseas vessels have cargo for discharge here, five being shipments from North America and three being from the United Kingdom. Two ships will load for Britain. One steamer, an American passenger ship, Marine Phoenix, which passes through Auckland tomorrow on her way from San Francisco to Sydney, has no cargo for discharge. Several ships approaching the Dominion must arrive within the three-mile limit not later than midnight on Wednesday. If their cargoes are to be included, in the 1947 import licensing allocations. Weybank, from the Gulf of Mexico, is the only freighter due at Auckland before the end of the year. Her present arrival date is Wednesday. A large shipment of motor cars, expected before Christmas from Britain will not now reach New Zealand until early next month because the ship was diverted to Jamaica. The shipment, instead of being part of the importing firm's 1947 allocation, will now be charged against the 1948 allocation.
