SAFE AND £900 STOLEN FROM HOTEL NEAR GISBORNE
(P.A.) Gisborne, Dec 28 Nine hundred pounds was stolen from the Matawhero Hotel, five miles from. Gisborne, early on Sunday morning. Thieves forced a bar window, robbed the till containing £72 and removed a small site from under the counter to a waiting motor-car. The safe contained about £B2B, including £lBO in cheques and 20 packets of tobacco. Later the safe was found blown open with explosives on the top oi Kaiti Hill, six miles away. The proprietor, Mr. Wattie Wilson, was wakened by a noisy car outside the hotel at 4.30 a.m., but his suspicions were not aroused and he did not discover the robbery until an hour and a-half later.
