INCENTIVE FOR FAT COLLECTION GOES

STABILISATION ACCOUNT GRAB CRITICISED (0.C.) Taihape, Oct. 3. On the home market fat realises from 3d to 4d a pound more than lamh, stated a letter received at the last meeting of the Taihape branch of Federated Farmers. In the course of discussion it was stated that in England fat is worth £175 a ton, hut the price paid in New Zealand by the Government is £25 a ton, most of the balance of £l5O a ton going into the Stabilisation Account. The return of £25 a ton was considered insufficient to warrant anyone collecting the fat. The meeting, over which Mr. D G. Gordon presided, was well attended. Tt ha ’ b OA n called to receive reports >r-,. t, yv p sherriff. representative on the Wool and Meat. Boards, and to discuss wavs in which the Taihape farmers might assist in the Aid for Britain campaign. The letter concerned had been written by Mr. S. Timhs, and gave information on behalf of 14 British meat marketing organisations in which he was interested. The English meat marketing concerns are anxious to receive fat and th P offal of the beasts which they receive from New Zealand. Full details as to how fat could be prepared for export were given and a request was made that the farmers assist in the exporting of all possible fat and sunport the marketing concerns in their claims that the offal of the beasts they buy be sent with the carcases to England. In the discussion which followed it was indicated that in New Zealand there are thousand* of tons of fat which could be easily exported. The Taihape abbatoirs alone have tons of fat, but owing to the large amount of Ihe Home price which goes into the Stabilisation Account there is insufficient return to warrant anyone collecting and exporting the fat. Consequent lv the British housewives go without. It was estimated that there must be hundreds of tons available in New Zealand. Fat in London brings £175

i a ton, while the price paid in New Zealand by the Government Is £25 a ton. Tli e balance is paij Into the Stabilisation Account. The meeting resolved to endeavour to have the stabilisation policy set aside as far as the export of fat is concerned, and to point out that hundreds of tons of fat will be exported to Britain immediately the return is sufficient to warrant the collection, preparation and dispatch.
