CHARGES OF THEFT AND INTERFERING WITH THE BRANDS OF CATTLE

(P.A.) Gisborne, Oct. 2. On three charges of defacing the brands on cattle and one of theft of stock valued at £27, Rangi Pohoiwi, a Maori, was committed for trial by Justices of the Peace at Ruatoria, to the Supreme Court at Gisborne. George Waerehu, a Maori, also was committed for trial on a charge of theft of stock valued at £B4.

In the case against Pohoiwi, the manager of Haha station, Rangitukia, stated that he discovered six heifers with the accused's brand superimposed over the Haha brand. As a result the police mustered the stock on the property of accused and found him to be in possession of a further six heifers with his own brand and earmarl: added to the Haha brand. In the case against Waerehu the evidence showed that the owner, Pine Taotu. attended a stock sale at Potaka on March 12, and sold 10 cows and 10 calves there. Later he recognised the same 10 cows and calves being sold again, and on inquiries found that the accused had put the animals into the sale. Bail in a sum of £lOO was allowed both accused.
