Wanganui Provincial Golf Title

KITTO AND SILK HEAD THE QUALIFIERS FORMER DOES 70 AND 71, SILK 69 AND 73

Playing consistently good golf, A. R. Kitto headed the qualifiers in the Wanganui provincial open golf championship, which opened on the Wanganui Golf Club's course at Belmont yesterday. Kitto returned a card of 70 in the first qualifying round and in the second round his score was 71. After playing brilliantly for a 69 in the morning, B. M. Silk experienced trouble at two holes in the afternoon to return a card of 73.

One of the features of the play yesterday was the performance of C. L. Cutfield, the young Wanganui player, who had the second best afternoon score with 72. The first stroke competition was won bv N. Freeman, whose card was 90-23-67. E. Cordingley was second with 85-17-68. The afternoon stroke competition was won by C. L. Cutfield, 72-6-66. D. Howden was second, 84-16-68.

The Belmont course is in good order for the tournament. The weather was ideal for the morning round, but in the afternoon there were several showers.

Entrxs for the tourney a.e good, and there is a large field of low handicap golfers. B. M. Silk played outstanding golf during the morning qualifying round when he returned a card of 69, four strokes better than the standard scratch score for the course. Going out in 36, Silk scored three birdies, and on the return journey he scored four birdies. His card read:— 0ut.'44343445 5—36 In: 34344244 5—33

Silk's golf was pretty to watch and he showed much better form than when he lost to the amateur champion, Guy Thorne, in the recent match against Wellington at Belmont. If he maintains this form he should be a strong man in the New Zealand team to play the Australians. Silk started the second round with a spectacular eagle 3. At the short fifth, however, he ran into trouble when he placed his tee shot in a hunker. He had to play hard to clear and would have required two putts. His second putt lipped the cup and he took five strokes for the hole. At the ninth Silk slice dhis drive into the rough. From a bad lie. he was unable to gain much ground with his second. He found the green with his third, but he required three putts. At this stage heavy rain was falling. He was 38 at the turn and took the next four holes in par figures. The 14th was a birdie, and the last two were par. A. R. Kitto was well up to form m the morning round with 70. He played a sound game and was steady all the way. He went out in 35, two below bogey, and returned in 35. His card was:—

Out: 34444444 4—35 In: 3534 4 3 4 5 4—35

Kitto has been playing steady golf | this season, and in the recent match between West Coast and Wellington he turned in the best cards for the two 18 holes in the singles. A feature of Kitto's play is his coolness and the ease with which he seems to get out of any trouble. His morning round was probably one of the best, exhibitions he has put on for some time, and tt was really good golf. He has been nominated for the New Zealand team to met the Australians, and if he can continue to put on this kind of golf he should be assured of a place. Playing consistent golf. Kitto handed in a card of 71 for the afternoon round ti> head the qualifiers for the open championship. His golf was sound and steady right through. On the outward journey he took par tig-, ures. and on the return he, was two ■ under bogey. His card read:— Out: 4 4 4 4 3 4 5 5 4—37 I In: 34435344 4—34 Hornabrook, a former New Zealand ■ champion and one of the nominees foi the New Zealand team, did not strike | form in yesterday's play. In the , morning round he went around in 78. hut in the second round he struck better form and turned in a card of 75. He was two over bogey for the first nine holes and returned in bogey Homabrook's play was disappointing and he showed a weakness on the greens, whereas putting was formerly one of the features of his play. When he last appeared in Wanganui about two months ago, Hornabrook was having trouble with his tee shots. Yesterday his driving was much improved but his putting was very weak. This is his first season’s play after a long spell out of the game. F. C. Hutchison was off his game during the morning, when he took 81, but he was on his mettle in the second round for a 75. J. B. Tunnell was another Wanganui Club player to strike good form during the morning and return a card of 71. His card was:— Out: 45444443 4—36 In: 34344364 4—35 He went round in 74 in the afternoon. , , Sixes at the 11th and 16th holes robbed T Casey of the chance of breaking par. He finished the morning round with a 74, and his card was: — Out: 34443544 4—35 In: 26 3 55463 5—39 Leo Whetton played up to his scratch handicap in the morning for 73. His card was:— Out: 44443444 5—36 In: 4434 6 4 4 4 4—37 C. L. Cutfield played a sound morning round to hand in a card of 76, finishing ninth. In the second round, however, he played better still to return a card of 72 after three-putting twice. His afternoon card was:— Out: 44463444 4—37 In: 34353 4 4 5 4—37 Cutfield has shown promise as a golfer and should be a budding champion. After making a poor showing over the first nine holes in the morning, U. G. Williams returned in two under bogey, including an eagle at the 14th and a birdie at the 17th.
