International Control Of Atomic Bomb Urged By Dr. Garbett
Reed. 10.20 p.m. London, Oct. 2. An appeal to all Christians to unite in supporting international control of atomic energy was made by the Archbishop of York. Dr. Garbett, in address Io lhe diocese. He said if Russia would not co-operate, other nations must proceed without her on the understading that Soviet adherence would be welcome any time. “If one nation must have a monopoly of the bomb, this should, for the time being, be the United States, but not every nation is confident that the United States will not use tiie bomb for power politics. I think even the peace-loving United States might give way under a wave of national danger or panic to the temptation to employ the bomb against some bated enemy.” Dr. Garbett commended the Baruch Plan. Russia had asked that al! existing bombs be destroyed but it was unreasonable to expect the Uniled States to destroy her most poxverful weapon until she hud a guarantee that some other nation was not making it-
