Soccer Club Refuses £17,500 For Star Player, Tommy Lawton

A. —Special—Copyright. > Recd. 6.40 p.m. London, Oct. 2 Chelsea, one of London's leading football clubs, is making soccer history by refusing an offer of £17,000 for Tommy Lawton, who also is England’s centre forward. Lawton has stated he is "fed up” with Chelsea, and wants to transfer, but would like to remain in London. One of the reasons given by Chelsea for refusing this sum is that they want another player in part exchange. “As cash doesn't buy the best players these days, we must resort to barter," said one director.
