WANGANUI PASSES FIRST-DAY TARGET IN HEALTH STAMP SALES

Aiming at a target of £2OOO for first-day sale s in the 1947 Health Stamp campaign, Wanganui and district. surpassed its objective, Wednesday's total on the opening day of the campaign being £2343 8s lid. with several more sums to come. Toward this total the city and suburbs contributed £l5OO, whereas last year sales on the opening day were £1176 in city and suburgs and £1738 in the whole district. Satisfaction with this result was expressed by the organising secretary. Mis. K. Gould-Fennell, t.'ho voiced appreciation of the enthusiasm infused into the campaign by the other women and women's organisations responsible for the work. A canvass ot shops had been undertaken by fourwomen as part, of the preparations for the campaign, said Mrs. Gould-Fen-nell, and the results of this were evident from the volume of first-day sales. Sales at the tables on Wednesday amounted to £ll5 10s 3d, an increase of more than 200 per cent, as compared with th e £4B worth last year. Orders accepted by the committee in their canvass were still being delivered yesterday morning, it was stated, the personnel being unable to handle

them all on the opening day. Yesterday’s sales wer e fully up to expectation, added Mrs. Gould-Fennell, and the demand was likely to be well maintained.

Tributes to the co-operation received from the Chief Postmaster, Mr. W. R. Stuckey, and the post office staff were paid by Mrs. Gould-Fennell, who also mentioned the appreciated assistance of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Individual figures for some of the centres in the postal district ar e not yet available, it was stated yesterday, but the district s total of £2343 8s 11. was made up thus:—City and suburbs £1500; Taihape £302; Waverley £57; Ohakune £45 8s 6d; Waitotara £2O; Ohakune Junction £l3; Raetihi £lOO Is sd; Patea £75; Ohingaiti £26. Extreme satisfaction at the results achieved throughout the city and district was expressed by the Chief Postmaster, Mr. Stuckey, who said that it was fully in keeping with the records achieved by Wanganui in the past. “Wanganui has an enviable record so far as Dominion campaigns are concerned, and the fact that the figures reached last year have already surpassed is something to be proud of,” said Mr. Stuckey. “Prior to the launching of the campaign extra stocks of stamps had been obtained in expectation of an increased demand, but the prospects are that even these may be exhausted if the demand continues at it s present high rate. In that case, of course, we will nave to obtain further supplies. It is a most encouraging feature of the campaign if such a course has to be considered immediately after the opening day,” added Mr. Stuckey.
