Britain’s Plight Not So Bad as Painted, Says Priestly

(Special N.Z.P.A. Correspondent)

Recd. 6 p.m. London, Oct. 1 Speaking at a meeting at Merthyr Tydvill, Mr. J. B. Priestley, who is a member of the Royal Commission on the Press, said:

“What is happening in Britain today is a good deal better than most of the people realise. I go so far as to say that a large section of the press is now devoted to the task of persuading the people they are having a worse time than they actually are.” The ‘‘Evening Standard,” editorially criticise s Mr. Priestley for attacking the Press while he was a member of the Royal Commission examining matters which are sub judice. ‘‘No member of the Royal Commission should reveal such marked political bias against the subject of his investigations, and remain on the judicial bench,” says the paper. "Mr. Priestley should resign.”
