FLYING-BOAT HAS TO TURN BACK

HAD ON BOARD BOYS OF A N.Z. BAND Recd. 7.35 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 1 Engine trouble forced a Tasman Empire Airways flying-boat to return to Sydney this afternoon after covering over 300 miles on the way to Auckland. Carrying 29 passengers, Ihe flyingboat took off from Rose Bay at the normal time, but two and a-half hours later a defect developed in the outer starboard motor. The commander (Captain A. Jury) decided to turn back. The R.A.A.F. air and sea rescue squadron at Rathmines was told to stand by, but. the plane returned without mishap. Among the passengers were nine members of the Auckland Watersiders’ Junior Band, who have been offloaded every day for the past week from planes leaving for Auckland. The band* manager (Mr. George Crowther) said that the boys ran out of pocket money four days ago, but they did not mind the delay. Several were all smiles when they walked up the pontoon at Rose Bay. “This means an extra day off school,” said one.
