SLACKNESS ON LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE

THERE MAY BE A BUDGET IN THE AUTUMN

Recd. 10.30 p.m. London. Oct. 1 The City’s main concern is the likelihood of an autumn Budget, says Reuter's financial correspondent. Until industry knows what new taxation burdens it may have to bear, it is impossible for stock market operators to gauge prospects. Meanwhile, dealers report the slackest conditions for a considerable period. Gilt-edged is the only section reaping any benefit from the present market situation, as idle money is being placed there for safe keeping for the time being. Dealers also realise this section has the brightest chance to make headway following confirmation that the Government intends to take over, and consequently issue, a new railway loan on January 1. Industrials hold a yery steady course, but in other directions the limited business being put through is resulitng in dull conditions and a lower price trend.
