RISING TIDE OF COMMUNISM THREAT TO WORLD PEACE

The plight of post-war Europe, the rising tide of Communism, and the threat of war unless a free world stood against it, were reviewed by Mr. Randolph Churchill in a public address at the Town Hall. To an audience of about 2000 people Mr. Churchill spoke for nearly an hour and then answered questions. The Mayor (Mr. J. A. C. Allum) presided.

“A good Communist always does what Moscow tells him, and don’t let anyone try and spoof you to the contrary,” Mr. Churchill said. Until Hitler ' attacked Russia Communists throughout the world did all they could to sabotage production. “The Communists are fifth columnists.” he said. ‘The Russian Communist is a patriot, the others are fifth columnists, spies, traitors and foreign agents, and should be treated as such. Mr. Churchill said it was not a happy story he had to tell. All the countries of western Europe had fifth columns inside them, and none could tell at what moment they might not seize power, either by revolution or by the advance of the Red Army. In Rumania there were 2000 Commun-

ists before the war, but today Communists were the Government. The proportion of Communists in New Zealand, some .2000 out of 2,000,000, was much higher. “I was very glad to see how outspoken Dr. Evatt was in the United Nations Conference,” Mr. Churchil{ said, “but we must remember he has General MacArthur and the United States fleet between him and Russia, and that it is easier for him to be courageous than, say, the Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia, who is practically inside the cage with a bear.” What was saving western Europe from Russian divisions was American monopoly of the atom bomb, h e said. Millions thanked God that it was America and not Russia that had discovered it, and yet there were boobies like Henry Wallace who advocated handing over this deadly secret to Russia. Personlly, he ws£ not scared of Russia, because the free countries together were 20 times as strong, but he was scared stiff at the apathy among British, American, Australian and New Zealand people.
