U.S. Army Hut. A steel hut formerly used by the United States Navy in the Pacific, has been delivered to the Wanganui Technical College for use as a. welding shop. The hut, which is 48 by 20, is to be erected by the Public Works Department, adjoining the engineering workshops.

Soccer Visitors. Members of the Marist senior soccer team, which won the Wellington Football Association championships for 1947, wifi visit Wanganui on Saturday to play Wanganui Technical Old Boys. St. Andrew’s (Palmerston North) will also visit Wanganui to fulfil an engagement with Wanganui Athletic. Both games will be played on Victoria Park.

A.A. Membership Membership of B the Automobile Association (Wanganui) increased during the year ended August 31 by 668, and now totals 5450. The association, according to the 23rd report, therefore, retains fourth place in size in [the North Island. The increase in membership during the year, of 21 per cent., was second only to that of the Wellington Association.

Baths Popular The three swimming baths under the control of the Wanganui City Council, which opened for the 1947-48 swimming seasoh yesterday, were well patronised for the opening day. All told, 12 made the initial plunge in the Gonville baths, eight at St. George’s Gate, and about a similar number at Wanganui East. Generous Gesture. A preliminary parcel of toys from the pupils of the Wanganui Technical College was despatched yesterday to the Wilson Home for Crippled Children, Takapuna, Auckland. Considerable enthusiasm was shown both by girls and boys in making felt and wood toys out of school hours for these incapacitated children. An interesting feature of the wooden toys is that they can be taken to pieces and assemoled again by the children, thus giving exercise to weakened hands, with which so many nf them are handicapped.

Art Scholarship. Advice from the secretary of the Association of New Zealand Art Societies was received in Wanganui yesterday that this year the travelling art scholarship has been awarded to Clifford P. Murray, of Auckland. The selection committee, whose choice was unanimous, comprised six delegates—one each from Auckland. Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, Nelson, Canterbury, and Otago Societies. There was a good entry of aspirants , showing much talent. The scholarship, which Is tenable for four years, allows the holder to study art in London and Europe.

Commerce Convention. The fourth Convention of the New Zealand Junior Chambers of Commerce will hold its opening session in Wanganui tomorrow, when delegates will be officially welcomed by the Mayor (Hon. W. J. Rogers) in the afternoon. Following general business in the afternoon, the Convention’s dinner will take place at night. Later the same night, the oratory contest for the Stotter trophy will be held, followed by a smoke concert. The Convention will be continued on Saturday, and a church parade will be held on Sunday. After the church parade there will be an up-river trip.

Pedigree Bull Sale Thursday, October 9, will witness the largest sale of pedigree bulls ever held in Manawatu. This 4s the 19th spring national dairy bull sale and show to b e conducted by the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. Not only is the entry a record in numbers, but the quality, conformation and production backing of the breeds is of a particularly high standard. The large entry affords buyers a wide selection. The show which precedes the sale will also be of special interest.
