AMERICANS ATTEMPT ARTIFICIAL RAIN FOR TEXAS FOREST FIRES

(N.Z P.A.—Reuter—Copyright.) Recd. 9.30 p.m. New York, Sept. 28. For the first time in American firefighting history artificial rain-making was attempted at Conroe, Texas, today in an effort to check 96 forest fires raging in south-east Texas. Two airmen poured dry ice on cumulus clouds from plane s flying at 10,000 feet. They said on landing that, they lowered the clouds about 1500 feet, but failed to produce rain because the clouds were too thin and too much warm air was rising from the forest. Further rain-making attempts will be made if more favourable conditions develop.
