SOCIAL AND I‘EKSONAL Miss D. Phair, Wanganui, is visiting Dunedin. Mrs. A. 11. Paske, who has been the guest of Mrs. A. O’Toole, College Street, has returned to Wellington. Mrs. A. Muller. Hutchison Street, Durie Hill, has returned from Auckland. where she was the guest of Mrs. P. Curtis, Remuera. Mrs. T. P. McGiath, Bulls, was a recent visitor to Hamilton. Miss Ena Rapley, the well-known Wellington singer, is to leave soon for England, to study with Richard Tauber. Mrs. W. Smith, of Waikaka, Gore, who has been staying with her mother. Mrs. W. Barkman, Taihape, is at present visiting Wanganui. Mrs. Pat Herbert, Selwyn Street, had as her guests for the week-end her sister, Miss Catherine Cameron, of Wellington, and Commander F. Lougheed, of the s.s. Northumberland. Miss M. Ellison, a former pupil of Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls’ College, took up her duties in Christchurch last week as the first woman welfare officer for Maori women and children to be appointed in the South Island. She will work as a liaison officer with the Vocational Guidance Centre, the National Service Department, the Department of Health and, where necessary, the probation officer. Gift Evening. Mrs. A. M. Mcß. Rennie and Miss Joyce Rennie, Nelson Street, were hostesses at a most enjoyable gift evening on Friday for Miss Margaret Evans, whose marriage is to take place -shortly. Competitions were hfld and during the blackout the twenty guests gathered round the piano for community singing. The guest of honour was the recipient of many lovely and useful gifts. Card Party. Last Wednesday, Gonville croquet ladies began their winter card afternoons. The president, Mrs. C. J. McLean, welcomed those present and hoped to see all old friends joining in again each week in the bowling pavilion. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent. Hostesses were Mrs. McLean and Mrs. Svenson. Winners were Mrs. Shipman and Mrs. Beattie. WANGANUI LADIES’ GOLF CLUB The Coronation Medal and Aotea Roa Cup match will be played on Wednesday and Saturday. The draw is as follows: Miss J. SENIOR PUPILS OF WANGANUI I GIRLS’ COLLEGE ARE TO VISIT WELLINGTON Forty-nine senior pupils of the Wanganui Girls’ College, under the supervision of three mistresses, leave this afternoon for an educational visit tc Wellington. The party has an extensive programme to occupy its time until the return on Friday night. The party will leave here at 3 o’clock this afternoon. Members will be billeted privately. Supervisor of the party will be Miss S. L. Sharp, and assisting her will be Misses B. Kerse and Savage. On Wednesday the Turnbull Library, Parliament Buildings, the dental clinic or the correspondence school and an art exhibition at the D.I.C. will be inspected. “Murder In the Cathedral,” the Religious Dram:* Society’s production in the Cathedral Church of St Paul, will be attended in the evening. A lecture on the State housing policy will be given the party on Thursday morning, and later they will be taken to see the large-scale building programme being undertaken at Nae Nac. The Dominion Laboratory and the Ford works will also be inspected. Thursday night will be free. The Wellington municipal milk department and the American Legation will be visited on Friday morning, and in the afternoon there is the choice of inspecting a broadcasting studio, the National Film Unit studio at Miramar, or else make a tour of points of interest about the Capital City. The return journey will commence at 4 p.m. CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE Another enjoyable meeting of the Wanganui Catholic Women’s League was held in St. Joseph’s Hall on Tusdav evening, and was opened by the Rev. Father J. L. Kingan, S.M. The president, Mrs. P. B. Luxford took the chair, and counducted the business of the evening. Members were asked to take part where possible in the functions of the town and country residenI tial nursery, and to assist the fine ’efforts being made to establish a nursery in Wanganui. The guest of Hie evening. Dr. Mollie Christie, gave a talk which greatly interested the large number of members present. Miss E Roche was reelected as the league representative on the National Council of Women. Proceeds from a “bring and buy” table were hanfied to the league’s “Overseas Food Parcels” committee. A programme of entertainment followed, contributing items being given by Mesdames J. Griffin and M. Corrigan and the Misses T. and A. Griffin (vocal quartettes), Mrs. Alan Brown (humorous elocutions) and Mrs. Stella Wills (contralto solos) Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames C. Corliss, Dunn, K. Clarkson, Downey, H. Davey, A. Finlay, Davis, Croasdale and Miss H. Ellis.
