BLASTING OPERATIONS AT WAIKAREMOANA

WORK PREPARING FOR THAT ON NEW POWER STATION (P.A.) Wellington, May 4. Successful blasting operations in connection with the new developmental hydro-electric works at Waikaremoana were carried out on Friday, according to a message received in Wellington to-night from Kaitawa. On Friday afternoon the Public Works Department fired an extensive group of shots covering an area of a quarter acre at the intake to the tunnel that will lead the water of Lake Waikaremoana to the new power plant. The object of the blastings was to break up and loosen the country prior to removal. | The blast was entirely successful, but resulted in some damage to the tunnel for a length of 50 feet. The damage was confined to cracking and spalling of concrete. Repair work is already in hand and will not delay the initial opening of the new scheme. A shaft, lined with removable concrete rings, and leading down to the tunnel entrance, was also damaged, but this is not a permanent installation and will be entirely excavated by the works in hand. Ultimately, all material above and in front of where the tunnel now ends will be removed, creating a small bay on the shore of the lake.
