LABOUR CANDIDATE FOR AVON

(P.A.) Christchurch, May 5. The selection of Mr. J. Mathison as Labour Party candidate for the Avon seat at tlie by-election on May 28, was announced this evening by Mr. A. J. McDonald, acting national secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party. The selection, Mr. McDonald added, had been made unanimously by the National Executive. Mr. Mathison, who is publisher of the “Star-Sun,” was born in the south of Scotland, and came to New Zealand in 1923 after working as a spinner in woollen mills. He unsuccessfully contested the Hurunui seat against Mr. W. H. Gillespie at the last general election. He was president of the Christchurch Tramway Workers' Union from 1929 until 1932, when a strike took place. He is recognised as one of the leading debaters of the 1 Labour Party in Christchurch.
