SQUATTER EVICTED CASE IN NAENAE

(P.A.) Wellington, May 5. A squatter who took possession of a State House at Naenae last December was evicted from the place to-day with his wife and two children. This is believed to be the first action of its kind taken against a squatter in New Zealand. The eviction was carried out on a Court order for possession granted by a magistrate at Lower Hutt to the ■builders of the house. It was the bailiff’s second effort to enforce the order. He made his first attempt last week, but men who were to be appointed by the builder to move the furniture did not put in an appearance, so the eviction was postponed. Neighbours of the evicted people gave them shelter to-night. The two children are suffering from whooping cough. The squatter was Mr Norman Stanley Harman, men’s outfitter, working at Lower Hutt. He moved into the house in December last, and has since contested two Court actions. The first was a charge of being unlawfully on the premises, brought against him by the police. This charge was dismissed. The second was a civil claim by the builders of the house for possession. This claim was allowed.
