SUNDAY CONCERT

SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION TO PIPE BAND CONTEST A programme to delight the hearts of Scottish people and all those with a love of the music and songs from the land of the heather was presented at the concert of Sunday night to mark the conclusion of the pipe band national contests. Every seat in the theatre was taken, and the audience, put in a happy frame of mind by what they had heard and seen during the afternoon and the two previous days, had an enjoyable timeFeatures of the entertainment were the playing of the champion A grade band, Hamilton Caledonian Society, and of the winners of the A grade selection, City of Christchurch, which played the four pieces that earned it 99 points out of a possible 100. Calls for encores .greeted most performers, but these had to be curtailed, and even so the programme had to be cut short to enable people to catch their trams. Contributing artists were: Mr. W. Grigg, vocal solos; Miss Dorothy McSkimming, elocutionary items: Mis. Shardlow, violin selections: Mr. W. Simpson (Wellington) vocal solos; Mrs. Mac Winnie, vocal solos; Mr. D. Tikauroa, vocal solos; Mrs- Mac Winnie and Mr. Simpson, vocal duet; Mrs. Anderson, original humourous stories of New’ Zealand personalities; Misses Jessie and Joyce Dick, national dancing By the time presentation’s to successful bands and bandsmen had been made it was time to call an end to the concert. Accordingly items set down on lhe programme, including dancing by Misses Dick, Hawke and Byres, had to be omitted.

Accompaniste was Miss Peggy Scott. The duties of compere were in the hands of Mr. S. R. McCallum.
