STRONG DEMAND FOR BREEDING EWES AT FOLDING SALE

(P.A.) Palmerston North, March 7. Notwithstanding heavy offerings during February sales of breeding ewes, there was a very strong demana again at Feilding to-day for both 2tooths and older ewes, the vendors experiencing a very good sale, indeed. Fat sheep prices were slight easier on last week’s quotations. Station cattle sold readily on a selective market, with farmers’ lots in demand. There was a very strong tone for store lambs, prices hardening under competition. The fat sheep offering was slightly in excess of requirements, some 400 head being disposed of under lair competition, and at rates which showed a slight easing in the case of wether mutton on those ruling last week. Maiden ewes brought up to 30s 4d; ’Down Cross 2-tooths to 33s 7d; ewes to 23s 7d; lambs to 29s lOd. With the mating season advancing, enquiry for breeding ewes was quite strong for the tail-end offering. Of several thousand head, there were several really good lines offering, and under strong competition a very good sale resulted. Prices ranged from 22s 3d to 42s 6d, One of the best sales in the station cattle section was that of a lino of 49 2i-year A.A. steers in forward condition at £l3 9s. A small pen of 15 forward S.H. bullocks changed hands at £l4 7s 6d. These prices reflected the buoyant tone. Due to there being good competition for several of the lines wanted, other lines were neglected. Good quality 18-month steers made to £9 7s 6d and other 2 h -year lines to £l2 2s. A small offering of beef experienced a god sale, with prices for best sorts close to current schedule rates: A A steers, £l6 7s 6d; Jersey steers £9 12s 6d; to £l2 7s 6d; small Hereford heifers £7 17s 6d; ex-dairy sorts were at late rates.
