NEW SOUTH WALES SWIMMERS PROVIDE BRILLIANT DISPLAY

(P.A.I Dunedin, March 9 Swimming of a standard higher than for many years, was witnessed on Saturday night, when the New South Wales team made its first appearince at the Dunedin carnival, arranged by the Kiwi Club, which organised the tour. Many hundreds were unable to gain admission at the baths. Uvon Crittenden, New South Wales freestyle champion, won the 50yds. invitation women’s freestyle scratch race in 29 4-ssec.. after a thrilling duel with Jaqueline Fraser, Otago 100 yards champion, who was beaten by tile barest margin. Betty Casey (W .llington), New Zealand freestyle champion, was third. The 100 yards was a great race, Miss Crittenden being overhauled in the last lap by Miss Casey, who shared first place in 66 3-ssec. Miss Fraser was a yard back, third. Noelene Mac Lean. former Australian junior champion, wc-n the international scratch diving corr.netition from Betty Moore (Otago i. Mayzod Reid (Otago) New Zealand chamninn. dived disappointingly to take third place. Ngaire Lane. New Zealand women's backstroke champion, won the 100 yards invitation short limit backstroke handicap in 73secs., and the 100 yard.'! women's medley scratch race in Imin. 21 l-ssc-c.

Lyall Barry (Nelson), New Zealand 220yds. men's freestyle champion, won the 220yds. short limit in 2min. 22 1-5 sec.—a record for the pool and only 1 2-ssecs. outside the New Zealand record.
