YEARLING SALES AT MELBOURNE
HELIOS COLT AT TOP PRICE ■ Melbourne, March 5Averages at the Victorian Yearling Sales continue to show a decrease compared with last year. On the second day of the sales 64 lots were sold for 40,935 guineas, an average of 620 guineas. For the two days 160 lots were sold for 115.865 guineas, an average of 724 guineas Last year the average for the first two days was 8581 guineas. A chestnut colt by the successful imported sire Dhoti from Sequoia, thus a half-brother to the Melbourne Cup winner Rainbird, was bought for 3000gns. on the opening day. The buyer was Mr, S. L. Calvert, of Victoria, who said he raced a horse or two occasionally as a hobby and was a non-bettor. Another chestnut colt by Dhoti from Delia realised 21B0gns. A Dhoti—Bon Cretien bay colt was sold for 2000gnsOther sales were:—Brown colt by Hellespont—Mellow Light, 1700gns; bay colt by Hellespont—Devotion, 1700gns; chestnut colt by Enfleldgn— Rose Princess, 1600gns; chestnut colt by Helios—Astolat, 1550gns. On the second day this year top price realised was 1300 guineas for a bay colt by Helios from Miss Gallon, bought by the Flemington trainer E. Fisher. Other good prices realised were: Brown filly by Zaimis from Fission, 2850 guineas; brown colt by St. Marnus from Cykanne, 1550 guineas: brown colt by Law Maker from Heart’s Desire, 1550 guineas; brown filly by Helios from First Ring, 1400 guineas; brown colt by Helios from Spanish Star, 1500 guineas; chestnut filly by Caithness from Maid of Oaks. 1050 guineas. The feature of the sales has been the demand for the progeny of Hellos. So far nine Helios yearlings have been sold for 11,650 guineas, an average of 1294 guineas.
