GREECE TURNS TO UNITED STATES FOR ECONOMIC AID

Washington, March 4 Greece has appealed to the United States for financial help. The text of a note, which was delivered to the United States Undersecretary for State (Mr. Dean Acheson) yesterday, reveals that Greece asked for American economic and technical experts, as well as funds, to meet immediate needs. The Note said Greece was without funds to finance the import of even those goods essential to bare subsistence. Funds were also necessary to make immediate purchases to enable the military and civil forces to restore security, and create a means of self-support tor the future.

The Note adds: “It is impossible to exaggerate the magnitude of the diiiiculties that beset those survivors in Greece who are devoting themselves to the restoration of their country. Such means of survival as remained to the Greek people after the enemy withdrew have now been exhausted. The need is great. The Greek people's determination to do all in their power to restore Greece as a self-supporting, self-respecting democracy is also great, out the destruction in Greece nas been so complete as to rob the Greek people of power to meet the situation by themselves. It is because of these circumstances that they turn to America for aid.” The Note made no reference to the British Note, received earlier, asking the United States to take over British commitments in Greece.
