1949 PIPE BAND CONTEST TO BE AT NEW PLYMOUTH
The 1949 national pipe band contest is to be held at New Plymouth. This wqs decided at a conference of the N.Z. Pipe Bands’ Association, held in Wanganui last night. New Plymouth’s application was seconded by Mr. D. A. Almond (Wanganui Centre). An application on behalf of the Hawke's Bay Centre was voiced by Mr. J. Lothian (Port Ahuriri) on the grounds that it was time the East Coast had a turn, particularly as the 1947 contest was held on the West Coast.
The secretary, Mr. H. Johnston, said that in the normal course of events the 1950 contest would be held in Christchurch. That centre, however, wanted .the contest in 1951—the year of the exhibition—and so Napier may have a chance of having it in 1950. Mr. J. Patterson (Wanganui Centre) moved an amendment that the 1949 contest be held in Napier, and this was seconded by Mr. Lothian. On a vote the amendment was lost, and so the contest will be held at New Plymouth.
