SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs. T. Ovens and Mrs. Pygall, of Oamaru, are visiting Wanganui for the band contest. Miss Langos, of Dannevirke, is the guest of Mrs. M. L. Wakely, Nixon Street. Hawera visitors to Wanganui for the band contest include, Mrs. E. Foster, Mrs. R. A. Ward, Mrs. C. W. Thompson, Mrs C. Humphries, Mrs H. C. A. Fox, Miss E. Rodgers and Miss J. Wilson. Mrs. S. Kendail, of Auckland, is visiting Wanganui and is staying with relatives. She is one of the official accompanists for the band contest. A number of members of a Dunedin Ladies’ Band, are visiting Wanganui to compete in the solo contests. They are Misses E. Keenan, F. Waters, J. Maxwell, N. Helmsley, C. Condon, N. Hood, B, Burt, N. McDonald and D. O’Hara. Mrs. J. R. L. Higgs has accepted the office of divisional commissioner o the Girl Guide Association, for the Wanganui-Taihape area. Mrs. Higgs has previously had experience of Guilding in England, South Africa and in Hongkong, where she was district commissioner for Kowloon. Mrs. Chapman, Ashburton, who has been the official accompanist for the Ashburton Band for many years, is visiting Wanganui and is staying at (he Upokongaro Hotel. A number of the bandsmen are accommodated at the hotel and others are billeted by residents of Upokongaro. A party of members of the Wanganui branch of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, visited New Plymouth at the week-end for the International Day ceremony held by the branch. In the party were Misses M. Sewell (president), E. Murch, V. Smith, G. Luke, E. Paye, I. Allomes, A. Rutherfurd, N. Brooker and Mrs R. Goodey. Miss B. Gledhill, Wellington, left by air last week for America to take up a position with the New Zealand - Legation in Washington. Miss Helen Hampton is also flying to America and is bound for the N.Z. Legation in New York. Both were formerly secretaries in the Prime Ministers Department. Miss Gledhill will join Miss I. Coates, who left some time ago for the Legation in Washington. Now qualified to practice as a public accountant is Miss Dawn Sullivan, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Sullivan, Campbell Street. Advice has been received that Miss Sullivan has secured a pass in her final subject in accountancy. Mrs. J. Blake, Duncan Street, Wanganui East, has had as her guests recently Miss Audrey Blake (Hawera), Miss Pat McCarthy (Wellington), Miss Margaret Blake (Wellington), Miss R. Jepson and Mrs. C. J. Jepson (Wangaehu), Mrs. Bowls and Miss June Bowls (Feilding). 21st Birthday Celebrations. Miss Margaret Blake, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Blake, Duncan Street, Wanganui East, came home from Wellington recently for twentyfirst birthday celebrations. A dance was arranged in her honour in All Saints’ Church Hall, Wanganui East, Miss Blake wearing a white evening gown with full skirt and lace yoke. She received many useful and attractive gifts. Ninety guests attending, music for dancing was provided by Trussell’s orchestra, and songs were sung by Miss Alberta Bousfield. Miss Blake cut a beautifully iced cake and was presented with an autographed key.
