TWENTY-FIRST BIRTHDAY DELIGHTFUL PARTY AT RATA (0.C.) Hunterville, Feb. 23. The home of Mr. and Mrs. E. Pickford (Rata) was the scen&ol a very enjoyable party on Friday evening, when they entertained over 100 guesis on the occasion of the coming 01 age of their daughter June. The evening was given over mainly to dancing, which was held on the floodlit lawns to music supplied by Mr. Marks, ot Marton. The lounges wete decorated with pink carnations, blue and mauve hydrangea and gy.psophila and altogether the preparations for the function just once again reflected the organising ability of Mr. and Mr:.. Pickford. Mrs. Pickford received the guests wearing a black tunic suit with white trimmings, while Miss June Pickford, who was enthusiastically congratulated on her coming of age, wore a blue and white floral frock with side drapings. During supper, which was on a lavish scale, opportunity was taken by Mr. C. Turner to propose the toast of June. He referred to her popuplarfty in the community and to the high esteem in which the tvhole Pickford family is held. Mr. Pickford presented his daughter with the traditional key and after musical honours Miss Pickford replied. The grandparents of June, Mr. and Mrs. W. Ashby, and Mrs. Pickford, sen, were toasted on the call of Messrs C. McManaway and A. Cameron. The huge birthday cake was cut with full ceremony by Miss Pickford. BOWLING. With the Marton green fully occupied on Saturday for the district singles championships, eight Marton bowlers visited the Hunterville green .and sides we;-o picked for friendly [counters. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent unu at tne conclusion of play Mr. J. McDonald thanked the Hunterville Club for their hospitality and the ladies for providing afternoon tea. The outstanding feature of the afternoon’s play was the performane of Petrie, a former member of the Hunterville Club. He was right on the top of his form and pestered "kitty" all the afternoon with delightful drawing shots. Scores were as follows:—, McNabb (Hunterville), Thomas (Marton), Brown (Hunterville) and J. McDonald (Marton) defeated Clarke, Petrie, Black (all of Marton) and Williams (Hunterville), 22-18. Lowrie (Marton), Lewis, Ironmonger and Mac Kay (all of Hunterville) defeated Kerr, L. J. Thompson (Hunterville), Head and Radish (Marton), 20-15. ... On Saturday next the district pairs championship will be held on the local green, when the champion pairs from Taihape, Marton and Hunterville will try conclusions. The winning pair will contest the Wanganui Centre champion of champions pairs. Bourke nd Morris hnd been selected to represent Hunterville. but as Bourke will be abesnt next Saturday, a lead for Morris v.-rll have to be selected this week. PERSONAL. Mr. and Mis. D. S. Morris have returned from a holiday spent at Paraparaumu Beach, and Mr. Morris has resumed duty as manager of the Bank of New Zealand.

Miss Innes, general secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, was a week-end visitor to Hunterville and was the guest of Mrs. J. Morrison, Vinegar Hill. She attended the annual meeting of the Hunterville branch of the society on Friday. Constable J. Scannell completes his term of service with the Police Force to-day (Tuesday) and goes into wellearned retirement. Mr. and Mrs. Sear.nell intend to spend a holiday in Auckland before definitely settling down. Mis. R. A. Gordon, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Gordon (Hunterville) and Mrs. W. Gillespie (Mangaweka) have taken a cottage at Castlecliff Beach lor a short seaside holiday. Mr. and Mps. A. Dalziell are on a deep-sea fishing expedition to Mayoi Island. Messrs J. Klue and F. Willis are visiting Lake Taupo. Mrs. L. Kerr and her daughter, Miss Merle Kerr, are holidaying in the Auckland’district. Mr. D. M. Mac Kay, of the Bank of New Zealand staff, leaves this week to spend his annual holidays in Gisborne. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER. The women's world day of prayer was observed in Hunterville on Friday, when a well-attended service was held in the Presbyterian Church, women from all denominations being represented. The service was opened by Mrs. W. L. Low and prayers were led by Mesdames Low, A. W. Baxter and W. Dallas. A short address was given by Miss Innes, general secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society. BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the Hunterville branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society was held on Friday afternoon, Rev. A. W. Baxter being in the chair. Miss Innes, the general secretary, was present, and'after briefly outlining the work of the organisation congratulated Hunterville on its record collections last year of £7O ,19s. Officers were elected as follows: — President, Rev. A. W. Baxter; vicepresidents, Rev. W. L. Low and Mes dames L. J. Thompson and W. Dallas, secretary, Mrs. W. A. H. Williams. Tributes were paid to the enthusiastic work of Mrs. Williams as secretary. and to the good service renderec. by the collectors. The appointment of collectors for this year was left to the president and secretary.
