MAKIRIKIRI SHEER FAIR
The firm of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., Wanganui, in reporting on their first Makirikiri sheep fair, held at Mr. Alex. Macnab's yards, Kukuta, stated that, pursuant to their desire* for saleyard facilities at Eastown, the settlers in the vicinity wholeheartedly supported to the extent that a yarding of 6000 genuine farmers’ surplus sheep were offered to a representative buying power from Taranaki, Manawatu and Waikato. Other local auctioneering firms intimated their desire to combine in this venture, but as temporary yards had to be erected, it was felt that the quantity of stock offered would be -all that could be satisfactorily handled under these condition:. Entries as advertised came forward to full numbers and were penned up ready for buyers’ inspection by 11 a.m. Delivery after the sale wal completed that night, and thanks to the co-operation of the Railways transport department all trucks were dispatched from Okoia without delay. The sheep were penned up in excellent order, the majority having arrived from their own paddocks the morning of the sale, and for the class of mouths ruling in this locality prices were considered most satisfactory:— syr. ewes, 27s to 29s lOd; very lowmouthed syr. ewes, 21s 3d to 265; maiden 4th ewes, very choice. 37s Id to 38s 6d; others, 33s to 35s 6d; 2th ewes were not offered in large numbers, and for the main part were on the small side for breeding purposes. Prices ranged from 27s to 31s; 2th wethers made 27s 9d to 295; cull cwa lambs, 16s; cull wether lambs, Ils.
