N.S.W. IN GOOD POSITION

BUT CRICKET MATCH WITH M.C.C. LIKELY TO EE DRAWN Recd. 10.40 p.m. Sydney, Feb. 24 At the end of the third day’s play in the cricket match against the M.C.C. New South Wales is in an unbeatable position, but it is very doubtful whether the State can force a win in the time remaining. Indeed, it seems probable that this match will fade out into England’s eleventh successive draw. At stumps New South Wales was 282 runs ahead, with six wickets in hand. Cool, cloudy conditions prevailed for to-day’s play. England’s hopes of reaching the New South Wales total were 'dashed when Hutton failed to get going again. The tail-enders offered unexpected opposition, Smith, Voce and Pollard all displaying surprising batting talent. Finally the innings closed 76 runs short of the State’s score. England’s innings occupied 200 minutes. New South Wales had played but one over before lunch, taking eight off Voce. Voce’s next over after the interval yielded 17, including a sixer hit over the fine leg fence by Carmody. Thirty-six runs had been scored in 21 minutes when, at 2.35 p.m., driving rain drove the players from the field. The game was resumed after half an hour. Carmody and Morris, although more restrained, continued untroubled. They raised 50 in 44 minutes. Carmody soon after fell to a smart catch at the wicket but, as in the first innings, had, with Morris, given the side a good start. England’s bowling, while not hostile, was accurate and Morris and Barnes were not finding the run-getting easy. The score at tea was one for 82.

Good catches brought about the downfall of Morris and Barnes. Enough was seen of Morris to show he is in good form for the final test beginning on Friday. With three out for 84 the Englishmen became keener, and the bowlers, for a spell, were on top. The second 50 took 54 minutes. By solid defence and scoring from anything loose, the colts Lukeman and Kissell regained the ascendancy. These promising batsmen have a full range of shots, and made runs all round the wicket. Their partnership was worth 82 and was made in 69 minutes Lindwall, in a hectic 20 minutes before stumps, scored 25, including a sixer off Smith. New South Wales at stumps had teen batting 176 minutes. Scores: —
