SWIMMING CHAMPS CONCLUDED
CANTERBURY WINS YALDHURST SHIELD FROM OTAGO TWO COMPETITORS GAIN TREBLE TITLES. (P.A.) Nelson, Feb. 24. On the final night of the National Swimming Championships, C. Chambers (Canterbury), and Miss B. Casey (Wellington), each won their third titles in 440yds. men’s and 220yds. ladies’ freestyles events respectively. P. Mathies,on, Auckland, who established the New Zealand record for 100yds. backstroke at Auckland in 1946, regained the title for that event in a close finish with C. Cliff < Canterbury L last year’s champion. Miss H. Snyth (Wellington) took the 100yds. breaststroke event after a hard battle with the Aucklander, N. Shaw. The water polo championship went to the Otago team which was unbeaten in the whole series. Otago has not. lost a championship game for 10 years
Canterbury gained a margin of 81 points over Otago to win the Yaldhurst Shield.
