KILMARNOCK’S YEAR

An old-timer at the Wanganui tracks yesterday morning remarked that though the course proper was regarded as being very firm —it was subsequently watered, with beneficial effects—conditions were not so bad as in Kilmarnock’s year. That was in 1909, when the meeting was held on Thursday and Saturday, March 4 and 8. After the races on the opening day an inspection of the course proper was made, and it was decided to hold the second day’s races on the “inner course,” now known as No. 1 grass track. The course proper had cut up so badly in several places that the horses were more than fetlock deep in loose sand, a factor which brought about the defeat of All Red by Kilmarnock in the Wanganui Cup. All Red had his revenge on the second day when he won the Wanganui Stakes.
