ON WANGANUI TRACKS

YESTERDAY’S TRAINING OPERATIONS

The course proper at the Wanganui racecourse, where the Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting will open to-morrow, promises to provide better going, than was generally expected, as the surface has been given a thorough soaking. Thousands of gallons of artesian water, from the clubs’ own bore, were applied on Wednesday and again yesterday, with the result that the track has already benefited materially. Horses doing their final fast workouts yesterday were able to gallop close in to the rails on number one track, which proved very fast. Slipping over half a mile in 48 1-5 sec., the Flying Handicao candidate Tideless set the main in training operations. The Tiderace mare covered the initial Quarter in 24sec and was doing it nicely. "It is understood, however, that there is a doubt about her starting in to-morrow’s sprint, in which she would have to carry topweight of 9.5, conceding from 121 b to 331 b to her opponents. Sir Flight and Quex were given a brush over three furlongs without being required to make time. Quex is to run in the Westmere Highweight and Sir Flight, a three-year-old gelding by Sir Beau, will be ridden by R. Burt in the Kai Iwi Maiden. Red Chief and Hoariri Bay were given a good working gallop in company. Red Chief appears to be improving and must be given a chance in the highweight event. Surrender, a Broiefort-Ruling Lady three-year-old gelding, was sent alone to cover three furlongs, but was not fully into his stride at the peg, so his 37 2-ssec for the distance was satisfactory.

Donegal Bay and Rebate were companions over five furlongs, taking 63 2-ssec., the first two being covered in | 24 3-ssec. Donegal Bay appears to have been improved as a result of her race at Trentham last Saturday, when she was not disgraced in finishing seventh in the fast-run sprint won by Da Vinci. Rebate, from the same stable, will be ridden by K. Chote in the Tayforth Handicap, in which event a rider has not yet been announced for Donegal Bay. Lambro and Te Aramoana covered a mile together, the former being much wider out than his companion but having a slight advantage at the finish, the last seven furlongs taking them 1.36. The pair are in Miss R. Jackson's stable and will run in the highweight event. Little Robin, who is on the minimum in the Tayforth Handicap, took 65sec. for five furlongs, the first three in 37. Now a 12-year-old, Little Robin is at an age when most horses would be regarded as in the sere and yellow, but there may yet be another winning bracket in store for the Resinous gelding. Tenacity scampered over two furlongs in 25sec. The Arvakur colt is not carrying a great deal of condition, but he is a game youngster and is not without a chance in the Springvale Juvenile, in which J. Eaton will have the mount. New Deer, benefited by his race in the City Handicap at Trentham, In which he finished fifth, ran the first two furlongs of a half-mile in 25sec. and completed the journey in 51sec. He will be ridden by the apprentice T. Howe in the Flying Handicap. Currency Lass, engaged in the hack sprint to-morrow, covered the last seven furlongs of a mile circuit in 1.35 2-5.
