LONDON’S ROAD HAULAGE WORKERS ON STRlKE.—Earlier this month London’s road-haulage men went on strike for higher pay and shorter hours, as a result of which the British Government called in Navy, Army and Air Force personnel to distribute food to the city’s shopping centres, mainly meat from Smithfield. Picture shows porters at Smithfield holding a meeting at the market. The porters struck in sympathy with the transport workers, and dockers also struck. Later, the strike ended following negotiations and a promise to hear the claims of the men and give a decision promptly. This photograph was taken on January 18, at Smithfield.
