RUAPEHU’S CRATER LAKE RISES

(P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 30 A marked ris e in the level of the lake in the crater o£ Mt. Ruapehu has occurred m the last few weeks. Thi s was observed by Mr. J. Healy, senior geologist at the Geological Survey Department's Rotorua Branch. He recently climbed the mountain and reported to the director of the department (Mr. M. Ongley) who released Mr. Healy's report to-day. The level of the lake had risen considerably since Mr. Healy's visit a week before Christmas, said the report. It now appeared to be within 100 to 200 feet of the rim of the vent fronting a bench which a former high lake level reached after the eruption. The lake was steaming quietly, and was a muddy grey brown in colour.
