DEATH OF NOTED PATEA SPORTSMAN
MR. D. QUICKENDEN President of the Patea Football Club, and a man keenly interested in all branches of sport, Mr. Daniel Quickenden died at Wanganui on Tuesday. A resident of Patea for many years, Mr. Quickenden was proprietor of the Central Hotel until his retirtment on account of ill health a few months ago.
Born at Cape Egmont 56 years ago, the late Mr. Quickenden spent the early part o£ his life in that district, coming to Patea about 17 years ago to acquire the proprietorship of the Central Hotel. Always a keen sportsman, he identified himself with all Patea district sports bodies, being president of the Patea Boxing Association in addition to the football club, and a committee member of other sports bodies. He was a Knight of Merit and a foundation member of the Patea Buffalo Lodge. Six years ago lie was elected a member of the Patea Borough Council, being in office at thc time of his death. A man with a genial personality and kindly nature, he was highly esteemed by aU who knew him.
He is survived by his widow (nee Miss Elizabeth Murphy, of Warea), and a family of three sons and two aaughters.
