WAVERLEY NOTES VISIT OF CHAIRMAN OF MEAT BOARD

(0.C.) Waverlcy, Jan. 29. Mr. G. H. Grigg, chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers Board together with Mr. J. J. Evans (general manager to the board), met farmers of the Waverley district on Tuesday evening, at a meeting of Farmers Federation of New Zealand, Mr. A. J. Larsen being in the chair. Mr. Grigg stressed particularly the necessity for maintaining the quality of our export meat, -stating that, when recently in England the British Federation of Butchers had told him that the continuance of our strict grading system throughout the war period had been wise and would pay dividends. It meant that New Zealand’s deliveries of meat to the Home market had been quality deliveries right through the war, and the brands and marks had been retained in front of the British housewife. The butchers in Britain had also told him most emphatically that the 32/361b lamb would immediately come back into its own once rationing ceased. Also with regard to defatted carcases the trade had indicated that once rationing ceased this type of carcase would not ba in demand—admittedly at present anything in the shape of meat could be sold, but under normal conditions the de-fatted carcases, which, because of the breaking of the outer-covering did not carry well and opened up at Home most unattractively. would not be wanted. He was satisfied the board’s policy pf deboiling these overweight carcases and exporting them for manufacturing and processing at Home was the best policy and returned the best price for the producer. .Mr. Evans dealt with the position with regard to pelts, of which the board had seen to it that the British manufacturer received his fair share, and explained the pbsition with regard to tallow. Both Mr. Grigg and Mr. Evans then answered questions from members. Mr. Grigg, after the meeting, expressed pleasure at the keen interest in the position as indicated by the questions put forward. Mr. E. C. Hone moved the vote of thanks to the guest speakers. WAVERLEY BOWLING CLUB.
